There are times when I make or design “other” things. Sometimes the skills from these projects cross-pollinate into my quilts, and sometimes I just need a break to create something different. Sometimes the mindlessness of simply sewing feels good as I let the harder work incubate in my head.
An example of an “aside”: In 2016, I promised myself to learn smocking to honor my late mom’s enjoyment of making smocked things for her grandkids and other little ones. She wanted to smock for her new great-granddaughter but was not able to. Thanks to many YouTube videos, a helpful lady I met through the Fibreworks gathering, and my mom’s ancient smocking pleater, I am carrying on my mom’s legacy.
